Castro Cabin History

The Castro Cabin began as a simple storage shed near the back of the property, adjacent to Stokes’ Building, which housed Stokes Evans, the Inn’s dedicated maintenance man for over 20 years. Later, the shed was moved to its current location and became employee housing before eventually being converted into a cozy guest room. Originally named “Castro Canyon” in tribute to the area where the Deetjen’s built their legacy, the cabin honors the history of the Castro family, early homesteaders who settled in the canyon during the 1870s. The Castro’s once owned over 300 acres in the surrounding area before eventually dividing and selling smaller pieces of their entire property. Four acres where sold to Helmuth and Helen in 1936, becoming the Inn’s beloved landscape.
