The Unique Historic Experience
Grandpa Deetjen’s hand-built Norwegian cabins, constructed between 1936 and 1961, stand as enduring testaments to craftsmanship. Nestled in the scenic beauty of nature, these rustic rooms showcase intricate details and traditional Norwegian style design. Immersed in the simplicity of a bygone era, the Inn offers a retreat from modern distractions–no TV, Wi-Fi, or cell service. With its beautiful antique collection and timeless architecture, Deetjen’s invites you to step into the past while providing a cozy haven for those seeking a tranquil connection with both history and nature.
Room Details
Check-in time is 4 p.m. and checkout time is 12 noon.
All rooms are non-smoking.
No pets allowed.
We require a two-night minimum stay on weekends and holidays.
Rooms are subject Monterey County taxes.
To ensure a tranquil stay for all of our guests, we ask that everyone be quiet after 10 p.m. and before 8 a.m.
We do not have roll away beds.
If there are more than 2 guests per room, we charge a $25 housekeeping fee for each additional guest. By order of the Fire Marshal over occupying a room is prohibited by law.

The Franklin House was added to the Inn in the mid-forties to accommodate the increasing number of visitors to the Big Sur area. Nestled behind the restaurant and alongside the charming hillside garden, the building captures the essence of Norwegian architecture. The Row
The Row was built by hand between 1940 and 1942 by Helmuth “Grandpa” Deetjen with the help of local labor. Nestled under the towering redwoods, perched above the serene creek, this historic enclave comprises 7 rooms, each meticulously constructed in the simple, wooden Norwegian style. Once housing Helen Deetjen’s antique shop in the first 3 rooms, The Row invites guests to step back in time. The combination of historic architecture, antique decor and natural surroundings, creates an enchanting atmosphere, making a unique and memorable destination for those seeking a blend of history and tranquility.

Creek House
The Creek House, a charming retreat nestled beneath the majestic redwoods, features two rustic rooms meticulously rebuilt in 2022. Paying homage to Grandpa Deetjen’s 1942 original, this two story structure maintains the authentic Norwegian style with antique decor to match. With two individual spaces set against the backdrop of a tranquil creek, the Creek House offers a timeless escape into nature. When reserved together the Creek House will sleep up to 5 people. Re-built with insulation between the walls for a more peaceful rest, it is perfect for a family with children under the age of 7.

Located on the Southside of the creek and furthest from the restaurant, this building boasts two tranquil rooms nestled under the towering redwoods.
