Champagne Room History

The Champagne Room, part of The Row, was constructed as a separate two-story unit between 1940 and 1941 during a significant expansion of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. This expansion was driven by the increasing influx of guests following the opening of Highway 1 just four years earlier. With financing from Barbara Blake, Helmuth Deetjen completed much of the inn that forms the foundation of its enduring legacy. The room’s unique name comes from a distinctive lamp crafted from old champagne bottles, which was once part of its eclectic and rustic decor. Today, the Champagne Room reflects the charm and history of Deetjen’s, offering guests a cozy retreat steeped in the Inn’s storied past.
