Edy’s Room History

Edith O’Ryan, the namesake of Edy’s room, arrived in Big Sur circa 1956 from Savannah, Georgia, following a harrowing escape from the sinking SS Andrea Doria after it collided with the MS Stolkholm steamer. At Deetjen’s, she became a beloved and trusted accountant, as well as a close friend to both Helen and Helmuth, known affectionately as “Grandpa” and “Grandma”. Edith was a memorable presence at the Inn, often drifting in after hours in her colorful kaftan, cigarette holder in hand. With a mischievous spirit, she would swap the restaurant’s classical music for Donovan or tunes favored by the younger staff cleaning up for the night. Edith remained a vital part of Deetjen’s until Helmuth’s passing, leaving an indelible mark on its story and spirit. Photos of Edith O’Ryan, capturing her playful spirit and warm smile, are still proudly displayed in Edy’s room. These images honor her lasting impact on the Inn and her joyful presence, reminding guests of the lively, beloved accountant who brought character and charm to Deetjen’s while she was here.
