Grandpa’s Room History

Grandpa’s Room, constructed in 1940, holds a special place in the history of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. Originally built as part of The Row, this room served as an antique store for Helmuth’s wife, Helen, who needed extra storage to accommodate her expanding collection. The seasonal rhythms of Big Sur’s tourism and Helen’s love for gathering unique treasures led her to transform this space into a charming, eclectic shop. After Helen’s passing in 1962, Helmuth, affectionately known as “Grandpa”, dispersed her antiques throughout the Inn and made the room his own, preserving its rustic character and filling it with memories of their shared life. It is here he resided until his death in 1972. Today, Grandpa’s Room remains a nostalgic corner of the Inn, with an original vintage record collection and antique piano, it embodies the warmth and eccentricity of the Deetjens’ legacy.
