Upper Creek History

The Upper Creek Room was originally built in 1942 by Helmuth Deetjen to house employees before being converted into a guest room. Nestled under the redwoods and alongside the creek, its sun-filled deck quickly made it a favorite among visitors seeking tranquility and connection with nature. Though the Creek House was tragically destroyed by a landslide in 2017, it was faithfully rebuilt as a near-identical replica, honoring Helmuth’s traditional craftsmanship and the Inn’s historic charm. The Upper Creek room now stands as a testament to the resilience of Deetjen’s, the Big Sur community, and the enduring beauty of the surrounding environment.
