Antique Apartment History

The Antique Apartment, located in The Row, was built by Helmuth with funding from Barbara Blake. Originally, this space was dedicated to showcasing and selling the growing antique collection of Helen Deetjen, whose passion for rare finds added charm to the Inn. Helen operated the shop until her passing in 1962, after which the room was transformed into a guest space. Adjoining the Antique Apartment was a unique addition Deetjen named the Holstery. Featuring custom built bunk beds and a handmade ladder, the Holstery was initially designed as a cozy haven for friends, as well as for guests who found themselves stranded or short on funds. For years, it was rented as a separate, budget-friendly option, embodying the welcoming spirit of Deetjen’s. Eventually the Holstery was incorporated into the Antique Apartment, and the original ladder—carefully refurbished—was mounted on the wall as a piece of art. This charming detail pays tribute to the inn’s tradition of hospitality and the resourceful, rustic craftsmanship of Helmuth himself. Today, the Antique Apartment invites visitors to experience the history and rustic allure that Helen and Helmuth instilled in their beloved Big Sur Inn.
