Stokes and Faraway

The Stokes and Faraway rooms have been favorites for many guests visiting Deetjen’s over the years. Stokes Evans was a woodworker who lived and worked on the property between the 50s and 70s. The Stokes room was his living space and the Faraway room was his workshop. He gathered and provided firewood for the guests staying at Deetjen’s. According to employees working at the time, he provided a safe and fun place for them to gather after work. He lived there until he passed in the late 70s. After Stokes passed away, the building was converted into two rooms to be enjoyed by guests.

In 2017 California was hit by massive storms. The Big Sur community had already been battling many road slides and flooding. On January 22nd a slide wiped out the Creekhouse with two rooms, Upper and Lower Creek, but nature wasn’t finished. Two weeks later a redwood tree fell on the Stokes building damaging the two rooms beyond simple repair.

Here we are in 2020, and after finally receiving the permits to rebuild, the Stokes and Faraway rooms are near completion. We invite you to enjoy a pictorial gallery documenting the progress made during the past few months. We look forward to having the Stokes and Faraway rooms available to reserve this August.
