The Rebirth of the Creek House

The historically rebuilt Creek House

Rebuilding a Piece of Deetjen’s History

Nestled within the lush landscape of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, the Creek House stood as evidence of Helmuth Deetjen’s craftsmanship. Built in the 1940s by Helmuth himself, the Creek House embodied the rustic Norwegian style that defined much of the Inn’s aesthetic. For decades, the Upper and Lower Creek rooms provided a peaceful refuge for guests seeking the serenity of the Big Sur Coast.

However, in 2017, nature dealt a devastating blow to the historic structure. Unprecedented storms ravaged the Big Sur region causing massive mud and rock slides up and down the coastline. On January 22, a mudslide tore through Deetjen’s property, wiping out the beloved Creek House. The damage was irreparable, and the structure which had stood for nearly 80 years was reduced to ruins.

The destruction of the Creek House was a significant loss not only for the Inn, but for the countless guests who had found solace within its walls.Yet, the spirit of Deetjen’s is one of resilience and preservation. After three long years of navigating the complex process of acquiring permits, contractors finally began the work of rebuilding the Creek House.

In keeping with the original mode of construction, the restoration was entrusted to local contractors who took great care to ensure that the new Creek House would honor the original design while incorporating modern updates necessary for its longevity. From the use of locally sourced materials, to the meticulous craftsmanship, every detail was a nod to Helmuth’s legacy.

The rebuilding of the Creek House stands as a symbol of Deetjen’s commitment to preserving its history while adapting to the challenges of time and nature. It is not just a restoration of a building, but a revival of the experience that so many guests cherished. With the Creek House once again standing tall, Deetjen’s continues to offer its unique blend of history, nature, and tranquility for future generations to enjoy.
